Missouri Tigers win their first round game against Clemson 86-78 in tourney

On Friday afternoon in Buffalo, the Missouri Tigers (23-10, 10-6) defeated the Clemson Tigers (21-11, 9-7) by the final score of 86-78, to advance into the second round of the East Regional of the NCAA Tournament.  The Tigers will meet #2 seed West Virginia on Sunday.

Missouri began the game with good defensive intensity, applying effective pressure, and capitalized on 12 first-half Clemson turnovers with fast-break baskets.  Clemson countered with 8-13 (61%) first-half 3-PT FGs, and also put back some offensive rebounds.  Clemson out-rebounded Missouri 19-11 during the first half.  Missouri's Coach Anderson called a time-out at 8:55 of the first half, with his team trailing 28-19, and encouraged his team to close out on Clemson's 3-PT shooters.  Keith Ramsey was outstanding on both ends of the floor for Missouri, as he led the Tigers with 12 first-half points, and the two teams went to the locker room with the score knotted at 39-39.

Missouri started a little slowly in the second half, then Kim English hit a pair of 3-PT shots, and Marcus Denmon scored a couple of buckets.  Clemson's Demontez Stitt picked up his 4th foul with 12:08 remaining, and less than two minutes later, Clemson's David Potter was whistled for his 4th foul.  Ramsey picked up a steal and an assist, hitting Bowers for a monster dunk to put Missouri ahead 63-55 at 8:10 of the second half.  A few seconds later, Ramsey pulled down a rebound and found J.T. Tiller streaking down court with a two-handed three-quarter court outlet pass.  Tiller made the over-the-shoulder catch for the lay-up and a 10-point Mizzou lead.

Clemson continued to try to mount a comeback, but fell short in the end, and finished the game with 19 costly turnovers.
Missouri had 4 players score in double figures, led by English with 20 points, and Ramsey with 20 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals in 24 minutes.  Ramsey outplayed the ACC's best player in Trevor Booker, who finished with 11 points.  Clemson was led in scoring by Stitt with 21 points, and Andre Young with 19 points.

Missouri was out-rebounded 37-25 on the game, but outscored Clemson 21-10 at the FT line.  Mizzou was credited with 14 steals on the game.  The Tigers assisted on 18 of 30 made baskets (60%).

After the game, Coach Anderson praised Keith Ramsey's career game, including "the great job he did on Booker."  The Tigers "hung their hats on their defense" today, and now, they're moving on to the second round.
