The Kansas Jayhawks defeat the Missouri Tigers at home 77-56 on Saturday

On Saturday afternoon in Columbia, the Kansas Jayhawks (29-2, 15-1) defeated the Missouri Tigers (22-9, 10-6) by the final score of 77-56.

The Tigers got off to a good start in each half, and led 17-10 with 12:08 remaining in the first half, following a Marcus Denmon bucket, before Kansas began taking advantage of their considerable size advantage, and pulled to a 24-24 tie with 4:08 left in the half.  From there, the Jayhawks rode some hot outside shooting to a 16-0 run to close out the first half, and went to the locker room with a 40-24 lead.

Missouri opened the second half with a 16-4 run, pulling to within 44-40 at 12:47 of the second half, before Kansas began to pull away again.  On the game, Kansas shot 53% from the field, including 50% from behind the 3-PT line.  The Jayhawks showed good offensive balance between inside scoring and scoring from the outside, and had 5 players score in double figures.  Kansas played good defense, but most of Missouri's struggles scoring the ball were the result of the Tigers failure to shoot the ball, as they finished 3-22 from behind the 3-PT line.  Very few of those 19 missed 3-PT attempts were questionable looks.  To the contrary, sometimes the Missouri players were so wide open that they seemed to hesitate to shoot the ball.  If you're going to shoot that poorly in your own gym, you're not going to beat this Kansas team, which played very well, and is as deep and talented as any team in the country.

With Kansas being this loaded, you would think that anything less than a Final Four for the Jayhawks would have to be considered a miserable failure.  And, anything short of a National Title would have to be seen by their fans as a disappointment.  On Saturday, Kansas out-rebounded Missouri 45-28.  But, Missouri's pressure defense forced the Jayhawks into 19 turnovers.  The Jayhawks bench outscored Missouri's bench 23-8.

After the game, Missouri Coach Mike Anderson talked about the regular-season finale.  "(Kansas) is a good basketball team.............. Let's give them credit............... It seemed like we just kind of ran out of steam.  That's very rare for teams to outplay our bench............... It was one of those games where you can't have too many things go wrong, and one of them was shooting the basketball.  We had some opportunities, and we just didn't cash in on them.   Our seniors really left it all out there."

This may be the easiest game to analyze of Missouri's season.  The Tigers played well enough to be in this game against one of the top 2-3 teams in the country, but they didn't make enough of their wide-open shots, hitting only 35% from the field, and 14% from behind the arc.  Kim English led Missouri in scoring with 16 points, but had to take 14 shots to get there.  Laurence Bowers chipped in with 10 points for the Tigers, but the  29 minutes he played against the Jayhawks' big front line left him visibly fatigued.

Coach Anderson talked about the end of the regular season.  "I thought our guys have done a phenominal job this year............. Our three leading scorers are sophomores, and losing Justin Safford really hurts our depth up front, especially against a team with the size of a Kansas.  Our three seniors have left their mark on Missouri basketball, and they're not through yet."

The 5th-seeded Tigers will head to Kansas City to begin play in the Big 12 Tournament, where they will open against 12th seed, Nebraska on Wednesday at 2:00 P.M. (Big 12 Network).  The winner will play aTm at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday.
