Tigers Pick Up Win #20 Against Huskers

Tigers notch win number twenty on the road againt the Nebraska Cornhuskers

On Saturday evening in Lincoln, the Missouri Tigers (20-7, 8-4) notched their 20th win of the season with a 74-59 win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers (13-14, 1-11).

Marcus Denmon poured in a career-high 24 points, on 12 FGAs in 24 minutes, and Laurence Bowers scored 12 points, as Missouri's bench outscored Nebraska's 41-17.  Zaire Taylor added 18 points and 8 rebounds, and Keith Ramsey was again outstanding on both ends of the floor, with a final line that read 4 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, and 2 blocked shots.

Nebraska chose to play a slow-down possession game, and was somewhat successful during the first half, as the Cornhuskers grabbed an early 11-1 lead.  Missouri Head Coach Anderson then called a 30-second timeout at 16:12, and inserted Bowers and Denmon, and the Tigers responded with a 15-3 run that pulled Missouri ahead 16-14, at 10:07, on a made 3-PT FG by Taylor, and the Tigers went to the locker room with a 35-33 half time lead. In the second half, Missouri took control of the game, playing tenacious half-court defense, and sharing the basketball on offense, as the Tigers finished the game with 15 assists on 25 made baskets.

Afterwards, Coach Anderson talked about the win.  "Defensively, we did a lot of good things.  I always say, if we can keep the constant defense going, and we start making some shots, watch out!  And, that's what took place today............... We talk about the strength of our team, and that's our bench.  What a night for Marcus Denmon!  We were reeling there, and Marcus came in and really got us going.  Marcus stepped up big time!"

In what was largely a possession game, defense was at a premium, and once again, Justin Safford and Kim English struggled on that end of the court.  Their individual struggles carried over to the offensive end, as the two of them combined for 3 of 16 shooting from the field, to go along with 1 assist and 3 turnovers.

Nebraska's Ryan Anderson stated off on fire from outside, and finished with 22 points, on 6 of 9 shooting from behind the 3-PT line.  During the early 30-second timeout, Zaire Taylor took charge, saying that he would take over guarding Anderson.  That was a big part of the ensuing Missouri run, and the Missouri win.

Sophomore Laurence Bowers talked about two consecutive 20-win seasons.  "I guess that means we're a winning program.  I mean, I'm speechless.  First two years here, winning 20 games or more, it's awesome!  I just hope we can continue."

The Tigers took care of business, and are building momentum heading down the stretch.  The Tigers are playing much improved basketball, and at times, are playing very good defense.
