Tigers start new home streak with win over Cyclones 65-56

On Wednesday evening at Mizzou Arena, the Missouri Tigers (18-6, 6-3) defeated the Iowa State Cyclones (13-11, 2-7) by the score of 65-56.

Iowa State hung around until the end, but the Tigers held on until Kim English was able to hit a 3-PT FG that extended the Tigers' lead to 59-53 with 1:44 remaining in the game.

Missouri had entered the game a little banged up.  Zaire Taylor missed much of the second half with an illness, and Laurence Bowers hasn't been practicing due to an infection.  J.T. Tiller began the game wearing a mask to protect the broken nose he suffered at Colorado, but quickly removed the mask and played one of his better games of the season, pouring in 17 points, and wreaking havoc for the Cyclones with his defensive play.  Bowers posted a double-double, with 10 points and 12 rebounds.  Keith Ramsey sprained his ankle in the first half, and was limited for the remainder of the game.

In spite of being short-handed and banged up, the Tigers prevailed on the battle of the boards 43-40.  Neither team shot the ball very well, but Missouri did manage to play much of the game at their pace.  The Tigers made the plays down the stretch, especially on the defensive end.  Coach Anderson switched to a match-up zone during the second half, which proved to be quite effective.

Coach Anderson spoke about the win.  "I thought our guys played some inspired basketball, especially defensively...........  Our defense was the difference in this game............  We got a lot of things going on, but through it all, we found a way to win."

Coach Anderson continued, talking about the impact on the game of his broken-nose senior.  "You see J.T.'s imprint on the game!  The thing I like about it is, he starts it with defense and his energy.  And then, the offense just happens............. His energy is contagious.  No question about it, he's huge for our basketball team."

Justin Safford chipped in with 13 points, and grabbed 9 rebounds.  After the game, he quoted his head coach,  "A ragged ride is better than a smooth walk."

Meaning of course, that the Tigers will take the ugly win.
