Maclin 'Something Else' Again, MU Rolls WMU
Mizzou's attack maintained its earth-scorching pace Saturday against Western Michigan, sprinting through five first-half scoring drives that spanned almost as many yards (291) as seconds off of the clock (305). The quick strikes built the Tigers a big lead, and despite some increasingly familiar second-half hiccups by the MU defense, this one was never in doubt as the Tigers handled Western Michigan, 52-24, Saturday at Faurot Field.
"Sometimes," head coach Gary Pinkel said of his offense, "things can happen fast."
That was the understatement of the day. Mizzou's offense entered the game having scored 11 touchdowns in an averaged of two minutes, nine seconds.
Redshirt freshman Jeremy Maclin remained the big story of the young season, piling 275 total yards and scoring twice – on a 17-yard run and a 24-yard pass from Chase Daniel – to spur the win. He also nearly broke free on a punt return in the third quarter after crisscrossing the field and faking out several oncoming Broncos.
Shelved all last season because of a knee injury, Maclin is the Big 12's leader in yardage and a yet another offensive threat for a unit that now has an embarrassment of riches.
"We find different ways to get him the ball, because he makes things happen," Pinkel said. "I don't think you can ever predict something [like this]."
That isn't to say the hints weren't there. Frequently last summer, Pinkel would be working in his office only to be interrupted by a player – often Daniel – telling him how good Maclin looked.
"This J-Mac guy is something else. This guy is really special," Daniel told Pinkel, the coach recalled after Saturday's game.
