St. Louis Athlete Talks College

Pinkel & Co. looking to tap into St. Louis again.

Hazelwood East wide receiver-defensive back Demarco Paine wasn't expecting to receive his first scholarship offer when it arrived from the University of Missouri this winter.

"I was real surprised," he said.

Paine, who is being recruited as a cornerback, is also receiving interest from Iowa and Kansas State. He hasn't taken any visits yet, but is planning to head to Iowa later this month for junior day and perhaps to MU soon thereafter.

"It's a cool school," he said of Missouri. "But I don't have a favorite."

Last season Paine piled up 660 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. Playing cornerback for the first time in his life, meantime, he picked of four passes.

"Only one player scored on me," he said. "I've been playing wide receiver and running back all of my life, but I can play both" offense and defense.

Paine is being recruiting by MU cornerbacks coach Cornell Ford, who covers the St. Louis area for Gary Pinkel's staff.

"I guess he sees me as a good prospect," Paine said.

A 5-foot-9, 173-pound junior who runs a 4.5-second 40-yard dash, Paine grew up a Miami fan and would love to be a Hurricane, but has not been hearing from ‘The U.'

"If they came, I'd take their offer," he said, laughing. He added that he "would like to go south, where it's hot, for real."

In other words, Paine honestly is probably not what one would classify as a Mizzou lean at this point. But there's plenty of time left in the game, and InsideMizzou will keep you updated should MU begin to catch more of Paine's attention.
