Red-Shirt Review: Taylor Chappell

Missouri freshman offensive tackle Taylor Chappell has been impressive since arriving at Missouri. We take a look at his first year and look at where he may fit in the plans come this spring along the O-line.

During early December, we got our first good look at freshman OL Taylor Chappell  6'6"  282  since fall camp.  What we've seen of Chappell is that he's quickly developing into a quality left tackle prospect.  Chappell took a few minutes to visit with ShowMeMizzou.com, and he talked about his first season at Missouri, and his development.

"It's definitely been a big change, especially as far as (the level of) competition goes, going from a 1-A school to D-1 football,"   said Chappell.  "But, I'm starting to get the hang of it.  It's been tough, but it's been fun."

Chappell said that he's down "about 8% body fat" since he arrived at Missouri.  He looks leaner, as well as having begun the process of getting bigger.  Chappell said that he's repeatedly set personal bests in the weight room this fall. His maximum in the bench press is 340 pounds. He's repped 225 pounds "around 16 or 17 times".

I asked Chappell what's been his biggest challenge in adjusting to college ball?

"(The level of competition) and just getting used to the speed of the game, along with learning a new offense,"  replied Chappell.  "You know, just getting used to everything (at this level)."

With Anthony Gatti and Elvis Fisher sideline due to injury, Chappell is currently listed second on the depth chart at left tackle.  He's very intelligent, and appears to be a hard worker.  He has great feet, which he attributes to his experience on the basketball court.  His technique is improving.  He just needs to get bigger and stronger.

"I'm just working on technique and fundamentals,"   said Chappell, talking about his immediate goals.  "You know, I'm just getting stronger and everything, so that I can compete this spring."
