Michael Egnew Named 1st-Team All-American

Becomes Third Mizzou Tight End in Four Years to Win Honors

For Immediate Release December 09,2010

Orlando, Fla. – The University of Missouri football program has produced some outstanding players at every position under the guidance of 10th-year Head Coach Gary Pinkel, but perhaps no position has been more heralded than the tight end spot (where Pinkel himself was an honorable mention All-American in his playing days at Kent State). Mizzou is fast becoming known as “Tight End U,” and that moniker rings even louder with the news that junior TE Michael Egnew (Plainview, Texas) has become the third MU tight end in the last four years to win 1st-Team All-American status.

Egnew was honored as such by the Walter Camp Football Foundation, with the annual WCFF team being unveiled tonight at the Home Depot/ESPN College Football Awards Show in Orlando, Fla. He joins former Tigers Martin Rucker (2007) and Chase Coffman (2008) as a 1st-Team All-American.

Egnew leads all of the nation’s tight ends with 83 receptions, and his 698 receiving yards is also second-most among all tight ends, with those figures coming against the nation’s 9th-toughest schedule, according to the NCAA. Egnew’s signature game was a 13-catch, 145-yard performance against San Diego State, and he’s also had double-digit outings against Illinois (10 catches, 60 yards, 1 TD) and at Texas A&M (10-87). Egnew also had a two-touchdown game against Colorado, when he had six catches for 52 yards in all.

Egnew and his Missouri Tiger teammates began on-field preparations Thursday afternoon for the 2010 Insight Bowl against Iowa, as Mizzou took to the practice field for a two-hour session, their first since closing the regular season with a 35-7 win over Kansas on Nov. 27th. The Tigers will be off Friday for the first day of Final Exams at Mizzou, then they’ll practice Saturday and Sunday, before having Monday through Thursday of next week off for a continuation of Finals Week. After Finals conclude, the Tigers will practice four more times in Columbia before packing up and heading to the Phoenix/Tempe area on Dec. 22nd.
