Tigers overcome a sluggish offensive start to remain unbeaten with conference opening win over Colorado

On Saturday night, the #22/#24 Missouri Tigers (5-0, 1-0) defeated the Colorado Buffaloes (3-2, 0-1) by the final score of 26-0.

The Missouri defense was just outstanding all night in posting the shutout, even turning the Buffs away after a Missouri turnover had given Colorado possession of the ball on Missouri's 13 yard line. There were several defensive standouts for Missouri on the night, including Terrell Resonno, Jacquies Smith, Zaviar Gooden, and Kip Edwards, among others.

Colorado had dialed up some defensive stunts and blitzes that proved to be effective early in the game, but Missouri adjusted their blocking assignments and Blaine Gabbert began to make quicker reads and throws, as Missouri moved the ball on a pair of first half TD drives. The first of those was a 7 play, 77 yard drive that culminated in a 30 yard TD pass from Gabbert to Jerrell Jackson. The second was a 15 play, 97 yard drive to close out the first half. It was on the second drive that Blaine Gabbert was sandwiched between two Colorado defenders as he ran the ball up inside to the CU 10 yard line, and suffered a hip pointer that eventually forced him to the sideline. But, not before he completed a 10 yard TD pass to Egnew that took the Tigers to the locker room with a 19-0 halftime lead.

Gabbert played throughout the third quarter, but was ineffective, clearly inhibited by his injury, and gave way to true freshman, James Franklin, early in the fourth quarter. Franklin proceeded to direct an eight play 70 yard TD drive, completing a 7 yard pass to Michael Egnew in the back left corner of the end zone for the score that salted the game away.

Missouri's special teams played a big role in the win, with a blocked punt, a blocked FG attempt, and a fake punt conversion. On the fake, Trey Barrow skirted around the left side for 26 yards, and a first down at the Colorado 30 yard line.

Afterwards, Coach Pinkel talked about the win.

"I thought it was a really good team victory," said Coach Pinkel. "It was nice to see our defense step it up. That turnover we had in the second quarter put us in about as bad of field position as you can get. That really says an awful lot about them. I'm glad we could preserve it at the end for them, too."

The story of the night was the Missouri defense bowing their necks, and pitching a shutout, but Franklin's play was also a significant storyline, and something of a highlight, at least until he threw the first interception of his career, late in the fourth quarter. Coach Pinkel talked about his QB situation.

"It was a high hip pointer (for Blaine Gabbert)," said Coach Pinkel. "He tried to go out and play with it. He struggled with it. James Franklin, you talk about the heat of the battle! That one drive that he was a part of with the offense, that was a huge drive from a young player."

Later, Coach Pinkel expressed confidence in Franklin, if Missouri has to go with their back-up QB.

Once again, T.J. Moe led Missouri in receiving, with 7 receptions for 85 yards. Michael Egnew had 6 receptions for 52 yards and 2 TDs. Jerrell Jackson finished with 3 receptions, for 51 yards, and 1 TD. Wes Kemp got involved, with 4 receptions for 38 yards.

Afterward, Missouri Offensive Coordinator, David Yost, expressed some of his thoughts on the victory.

"Well, I'd like to have been a little bit more consistent on offense," said Coach Yost. "But, the defense did a phenomenal job, and kept giving us the ball in good positions, and we did enough to win it. And, we got out with a victory, which is always a positive when you're playing in the Big 12. It doesn't matter who you're playing, a victory in the Big 12 is a big win."
